Monish was born in India. His father served in the Air Force and his mother taught at a primary school. At age 16, after his Grade 101 exams in India, he was awarded the SIA Youth Scholarship and moved to Singapore. He completed his junior college education at the National Junior College.

He continued his undergraduate2 studies in Singapore, at the Nanyang Technological University, as an SIA-NOL scholar. He was then awarded the NTU Research Scholarship to pursue postgraduate3 studies at the same university. He specialized in finance through both the degrees. He then continued with derivatives trading at Commerz Capital, a Singapore-based hedge fund, for about a year. From 2006 to 2015, Monish worked at UOB Bank in Singapore, as part of the team making equity and hedge fund investments for the bank's capital.

In 2015, he set up Lodestar Holdings Limited, a holding company that invests in a balanced portfolio of assets, globally.
